Skepticism/Critical Thinking

Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House, gives us an example of what I am talking about:

"In 2024 he told reporters, 'We all know, intuitively, that a lot of illegals are voting in federal elections.'" (credit: Heather Cox Richardson)

This is an oxymoron. Your intuition is not reliable for understanding what is true. The truth in this case is that there NEVER has been a significant issue of voter fraud in the modern voting process.

Skepticism is accepting claims only based on enough evidence to support them.  It is NOT "cynicism", which is a belief that people are generally selfish and dishonest.

Years ago, in his seminal book The Demon-Haunted World, Carl Sagan presented an excellent encapsulation of skepticism/critical thinking entitled, a The Fine Art of Baloney Detection.
