The Fusion Breakthrough: The Reality

"Scientists at the Lawrence Livermore Lab for the first time produced more energy from a fusion reactor than was put into it. Sort-of. It's a big deal... Just not THAT big of a deal."

Calcium Carbonate: Is It The "Secret Sauce" Of Carbon Capture?

"Researchers have now measured the energy changes among different forms of what is one of the most widespread minerals on Earth—from its messy noncrystalline forms to beautiful calcite crystals that could lock away carbon underground for thousands to millions of years.

“Calcium carbonate is the major long-term sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide,” says Alexandra Navrotsky, professor of ceramic, earth, and environmental materials at University of California at Davis.

"Steps to mitigate global climate change will likely include extracting carbon dioxide from power plant flues and the atmosphere and storing it underground, initially as a dense gas in old mines and depleted oil reservoirs that would eventually turn into solid, stable calcium carbonate through chemical reactions."

Update On Climate Change Mitigation Efforts

"As Putin’s war in Ukraine forces the western world to wean itself off Russian oil and gas, the former U.S. Vice President Al Gore is urging world leaders to not use the energy crunch as an excuse. Speaking at the opening of the COP27 summit, Gore said we must 'choose life over death,' and not make long-term commitments to fossil fuels. To discuss developments from the conference and new climate initiatives, Al Gore speaks with Walter Isaacson."

The Truth About Electric Cars

"If it seems that there are too many Skeptoid episodes about electric cars this year, that's because it's a show about popular myths. And hardly any topic is more timely and popular as electric cars. We have states (and whole nations) requiring that increasing percentages of new car sales be for zero-emission vehicles. We have climate-driven heat waves putting extraordinary demand on power grids. We have an election year, when misinformation and disinformation tend to take over the news. So, yeah, electric cars are a hot topic right now. And they are the subject of one of the most common new claims: that as electric cars become more and more ubiquitous, power grids will not be able to keep up with the increased demand, and everything will go to heck. Or something. Is it true?"

The Price We Will Pay For Not Accepting Climate Change Earlier

"Gaia Vince's new book delivers a message that is clear, sharp, and jolting. Large regions of the world are becoming unlivable, she says - lethal for 3 to 5 billion of us. We can survive, but to do so will require a planned and deliberate migration of the kind humanity has never before undertaken. Her new book, "Nomad Century: How Climate Migration Will Reshape Our World" - Gaia Vince, the award-winning science journalist joins us now from London."

The Ancients Have Something To Teach Us

"Heat pumps are all the rage these days, and for good reason, but it turns out that ancient Persians had ways of making and storing ice, long before refrigeration existed. Today, engineers are taking from that ancient knowledge to design homes that cool without the need for electricity. And it could be the future of building design."

Climate Change: A Deep Dive That's Understandable

"What's the real cause of climate change? Is global warming real? Are humans causing climate change? What is climate change? We do a deep dive into the data to find answers. The world today is 0.85 degrees (C) hotter than in 1980, projected to increase 1.5C in 40 years."

The Latest On Nuclear Energy

"Is nuclear power good or bad? In this much-asked-for episode I will summarize the most up-to-date numbers on the status of nuclear power and break down its pros and cons. We will also look at what the new technological developments have to offer: molten salt reactors, thorium reactors, and small modular reactors. I learned a lot while working on this video and I hope you find this summary useful."

Weather And Climate Change

"In the past two years or so we have seen many headlines about extreme weather events: floods, droughts, heatwaves, hurricanes. In some cases, climate scientists claim they can 'attribute' those extreme weather events to climate change. But what exactly does that mean? How does one calculate this? And how reliable are those estimates? This video is a brief introduction to the young research area of extreme event attribution."

The Problem With Concrete And Bitcoin

"Today we're going to point our skeptical eye at concrete, specifically at the popular figure of 8% of all greenhouse gas emissions that concrete is said to be responsible for. That's 2.8 gigatons a year, as of 2020. If that number is true, then that's wildly out of control. In fact, if the global concrete industry was a country, it would be the world's third-largest emitter of carbon, after only China and the United States. We humans use more concrete than any other substance except water, and the reason is that it's great. It's inexpensive, the structures we create from it are extremely durable, and it's easy to work with, being formable into any shape. We are going to use even more of it in the future, about one quarter more than today, as places like China, India, and Africa continue to build out their modern infrastructure. So if that 8% number is even close to true, we may have a real problem on our hands."

The Case Is Closed: Climate Change Denial Is Scientifically Dead

"Nearly a decade ago, an influential review of climate-related studies found a 97% consensus about man's impact on climate change. Now a new review, led by Mark Lynas, has found a 99.9% consensus. Lynas says the science is so settled that 'it is case closed.' Republicans 'undermining the case for action' are basing that entirely on politics, not science, he adds. Lynas discusses how 'right-wing media' in the United States tends to offer 'anti-scientific perspectives on climate change' and needs to start offering more 'right-wing solutions.' He also discusses how climate change reporting is evolving, and what to expect from COP26, a pivotal UN climate summit."

Climate Change: Is It Happening Faster Than Scientists Expected?

"The rapid succession of precedent-shattering extreme weather events in North America and Europe this summer is prompting some scientists to question whether climate extremes are worsening faster than expected.

"Why it matters: Extreme weather events are the deadliest, most expensive, and immediate manifestations of climate change. Any miscalculations in how severe these events may become, from wildfires to heatwaves and heavy rainfall, could make communities more vulnerable."

Carbon Capture: The "Holy Grail" For Addressing Climate Change?

Climate Change 101

It is clear that a large portion of the USA population still is mired in magical thinking, which includes climate change denial. The short video below does a good job in presenting the facts and the probable future of the planet, and us, if science-based thinking continues to be marginalized by powerful political and economic forces:
