The Olympics Are Immoral

Okay, take a deep breath, and please really listen to me.  First of all, I grew up in the late 1940s into the early 1960s and was a real fan of the Olympics.  There was a strict code of ethics:  no professional athletes or teams; winners by nation not emphasized officially; strict control of substance abuse.  It was a joy, as it closely mirrored the ancient Greek Olympics.  Please understand two important things:  I do enjoy the ATHLETES who perform so well and I am NOT criticizing THEM at all:  it is the process involved with these games that I think is immoral.

What do we have now?  We have huge control by multi-national media corporations, nations that are clearly violating basic human rights hosting the event, financial devastation for many host nations, and horrible conditions inflicted on the poor.

Taxpayers in Brazil will spend over £3.8 billion to host the Games this year. Meanwhile, many of Rio's citizens will watch the excitement from rooftops because they cannot afford to attend.

There's a Dark History Behind the Glittering Olympic Games
