How many Catholics who really understand science accept this? Accept Catholic teaching and unequivocally reject science, or vise versa.


While Papal Encyclicals are not "infallible"and doctrine found in them could change, all Catholics still are obligated to adhere to the pronouncements within Encyclicals. So, what is the practical difference? The fact is that the Catholic Church has a Tradition based on a literal interpretation of Genesis since its beginning. It was encapsulated in the 1950 Encyclical and all Catholics are obligated to accept it.

In previous Church history regarding its doctrine conflicting with science, the Church eventually changed its opinion under the pressure from science. However, it has been 65 years since the Encyclical in question has been held up as doctrine that MUST be believed to be a Catholic in good standing. The language is unequivocal. The scientific facts against the literal interpretation have been snowballing since 1950. Will the Church accept what science has found regarding the origins of humans? This is a VERY important question because, unlike the other reversals of the Church in the face of science, acceptance of human origins facts from science would be the death knell for Christianity, and it knows it.
