"American politics has always been a staging ground for moral and religious conflicts."
Stephen Prothero's latest book, "Why Liberal Win the Cultural Wars (Even When They Lose Elections" , presents a consistent historical record since the founding of the USA of bigotry, fear and resistance to positive change by conservatives. However, this is followed by liberals launching a counter-attack. Next comes accommodation and compromise. In the final stage, liberals win, and society becomes more inclusive of minorities and new positive ideas. Prothero also makes the point that one reason that liberals always win is that the conservatives were on the way to losing even before they protested against the change.
