The Harm From Religion

There is on-going discussion among theists and atheist regarding the harm from religion.  I accept the claim that there can be some good from religion, however, every part of religion that is a good can be provided by secular organizations.

Below are just a few links in support of the claim that religion is harmful:

“Religion is ultimately dependent on belief in invisible beings, inaudible voices, intangible entities, undetectable forces, and events and judgments that happen after we die.  It, therefore, has no reality check.

“And it is, therefore, uniquely armored against criticism, questioning, and self-correction. It is uniquely armored against anything that might stop it from spinning into extreme absurdity, extreme denial of reality ... and extreme, grotesque immorality.”

1.  Religion promotes tribalism.
2.  Religion anchors believers to the Iron Age.
3.  Religion makes a virtue out of faith.
4.  Religion diverts generous impulses and good intentions.
5.  Religion teaches helplessness.
6.  Religions seek power.

“We do not have far to look to find examples of Christians denying life-saving medical care to their children, promoting teen pregnancy and the spread of HIV/AIDS, or bombing medical clinics - all due to superstition. Nor do we have far to look to find Muslims flying planes into buildings, strapping explosives to their chests, and killing their own children due to a warped sense of "honor" - all due to superstition.”
