Has Magical Thinking Won?

The history of humanity has mostly been dominated by magical thinking (ignorance, superstition, dogma, and religion). Thus, science-based thinking essentially has only been around for about .25% of our existence (500 years of science out of 200,000 years). Science since its beginning has had to battle against these negative forces, of which the most prominent example has been religion. The Enlightenment and the US Constitution have been in the vanguard of opposing these forces.

In the USA, a minority of its people (conservative Catholics, evangelical Protestants, and ultra-orthodox Jews) began to gain power exceeding their numbers after President Nixon's perfection of the Republican "Southern Strategy." These political forces have slowly been gaining power to the point of causing the election of Donald J Trump as President. In other words, this aggressive magical thinking minority has hijacked one of the two major political parties. Since Trump's election, this power continues to gain strength, in spite of his total depravity and lack of fitness for the office. The clearest example of this power has been the appointment of several conservative Federal judges throughout the USA and two Supreme Court Justices. Most of us science-based thinkers have been on pins and needles regarding Ruth Bader Ginsberg as a strong liberal Justice in a conservative-majority Supreme Court. In my opinion, yesterday, September 18, 2020, was another "date that will live in infamy." Yes, strong words. However, just ponder the effects of magical thinking that suddenly now, in the face of massive fires in the West and a pandemic, have a clear path to political dominance for decades, for example:

  • Evolution denial
  • Climate change denial
  • Medical science denial
  • Economic and social inequality
  • Theocratic authoritarian government
  • Going against the political norms of representative democracy: Gerrymandering; voter suppression; support of non-representative Electoral College; abuse of Senate protocol.
Only "We, The People" can fight this evil through activism and voting. Now is not the time to back down.

Black Lives Matter: The Truth

In my monitoring of conservative Christian media, there is a fairly consistent meme against Black Lives Matter: *it is trying to destroy the nuclear family. What is the truth? How about listening to what THEY are saying:

"Black Lives Matter began as a call to action in response to state-sanctioned violence and anti-Black racism. Our intention from the very beginning was to connect Black people from all over the world who have a shared desire for justice to act together in their communities. The impetus for that commitment was, and still is, the rampant and deliberate violence inflicted on us by the state.

"Enraged by the death of Trayvon Martin and the subsequent acquittal of his killer, George Zimmerman, and inspired by the 31-day takeover of the Florida State Capitol by POWER U and the Dream Defenders, we took to the streets. A year later, we set out together on the Black Lives Matter Freedom Ride to Ferguson, in search of justice for Mike Brown and all of those who have been torn apart by state-sanctioned violence and anti-Black racism. Forever changed, we returned home and began building the infrastructure for the Black Lives Matter Global Network, which, even in its infancy, has become a political home for many.

"Ferguson helped to catalyze a movement to which we’ve all helped give life. Organizers who call this network home have ousted anti-Black politicians, won critical legislation to benefit Black lives, and changed the terms of the debate on Blackness around the world. Through movement and relationship building, we have also helped catalyze other movements and shifted culture with an eye toward the dangerous impacts of anti-Blackness.

"These are the results of our collective efforts.

"The Black Lives Matter Global Network is as powerful as it is because of our membership, our partners, our supporters, our staff, and you. Our continued commitment to liberation for all Black people means we are continuing the work of our ancestors and fighting for our collective freedom because it is our duty.

"Every day, we recommit to healing ourselves and each other, and to co-creating alongside comrades, allies, and family a culture where each person feels seen, heard, and supported.

"We acknowledge, respect, and celebrate differences and commonalities.

"We work vigorously for freedom and justice for Black people and, by extension, all people.

"We intentionally build and nurture a beloved community that is bonded together through a beautiful struggle that is restorative, not depleting.

"We are unapologetically Black in our positioning. In affirming that Black Lives Matter, we need not qualify our position. To love and desire freedom and justice for ourselves is a prerequisite for wanting the same for others.

"We see ourselves as part of the global Black family, and we are aware of the different ways we are impacted or privileged as Black people who exist in different parts of the world.

"We are guided by the fact that all Black lives matter, regardless of actual or perceived sexual identity, gender identity, gender expression, economic status, ability, disability, religious beliefs or disbeliefs, immigration status, or location.

"We make space for transgender brothers and sisters to participate and lead.

"We are self-reflexive and do the work required to dismantle cisgender privilege and uplift Black trans folk, especially Black trans women who continue to be disproportionately impacted by trans-antagonistic violence.

"We build a space that affirms Black women and is free from sexism, misogyny, and environments in which men are centered.

"We practice empathy. We engage comrades with the intent to learn about and connect with their contexts.

"We make our spaces family-friendly and enable parents to fully participate with their children. We dismantle the patriarchal practice that requires mothers to work “double shifts” so that they can mother in private even as they participate in public justice work.

"We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable.

"We foster a queer‐affirming network. When we gather, we do so with the intention of freeing ourselves from the tight grip of heteronormative thinking, or rather, the belief that all in the world are heterosexual (unless s/he or they disclose otherwise).

"We cultivate an intergenerational and communal network free from ageism. We believe that all people, regardless of age, show up with the capacity to lead and learn.

"We embody and practice justice, liberation, and peace in our engagements with one another."

Ponder the value of extended families (link) and the belief that the nuclear family was a mistake (link).

Final thoughts: every positive social movement will be attacked by conservatives; there will be some within such movements who will act inappropriately; forces against such movements will attempt to infiltrate them to perform violent acts to discredit them.

It's A Public Health Issue

While, on the surface, statistics for the results of homeschooling vs. public schools seem favorable to homeschooling (link), objectively looking at the social, economical, and demographic differences between the two seems to explain most of the results (link), (link).

"States need to recognize the importance of oversight, as unsupervised homeschooling is still prevalent in most states, which allows fundamentalist parents to raise generations of children who are mathematically, scientifically, and socially illiterate in an environment undoubtedly dangerous to their wellbeing."

With the growing influence of Evangelical and conservative Catholic Christians in society (While they are a minority, they are politically punching above their weight), the Homeschooling movement continues to grow like a brain disease (which indoctrination is).
Christian Homeschooling Still Failing Kids

Frankly, I would like to see a school requirement, NO MATTER THE SETTING, of education in critical thinking (i.e. science-based thinking/skepticism).

Beware Of The Unholy Alliance

Imagine the difference in the USA's political scene if Evangelical Protestants and Conservative Catholics had not allied around abortion and the LGBTQ/Same-Sex Marriage issues. While the road to this strategic alliance has not always been smooth (link)(link)(link), there has been a "marriage-of-convenience" (link). These two radical religious blocks are essentially double the votes demographically of the "Nones."

Because of the above, progressives must get active and vocal about educating the rest of the US regarding the danger of these far-right religious dogmatists, especially the potential of legally overturning Roe v. Wade and Same-Sex Marriage laws. Talking points should include the long tradition of "Bodily Autonomy" (link)(link) and how science reveals the non-binary nature of sex/gender (link).

The Catholic Church Exposed

If you follow me you know that I have shown that science has falsified Christianity, including Catholicism (It begins at the beginning, folks: link). What you may not know is that conservative Catholicism is essentially Evangelical Protestantism with the veneer of reason and education. Why do I say that? The 60-minute video below includes the highlights of the US Catholic Bishops' Fall Meeting that was held this week in Baltimore. In such, the following points were made:
  • The majority of the Bishops agreed with the statement that "Abortion is the preeminent issue we face in the USA." Really? Worse than what is happening at our southern border? Worse than what Trump is doing (or not doing)? Worse than what his cabinet is doing (or not doing)? Worse than what the courts are doing? Worse than the homeless crisis? Worse than the affordability and access to healthcare for millions? Worse than the debt crisis that is going to end with a recession if not a depression? Worse than the effects of climate change? Not one word about the bodily autonomy rights of the women in the discussion.
  • The tone of the conference was supportive of Trump and his policies.
Actually, these Bishops are only promulgating the Dogmas of the Catholic Church. Catholics are obligated to support all of them!! Ironically, most Catholic apologists believe that their "Faith" (belief without evidence) and science are compatible and most Catholics don't realize their "obligations" as a Catholic.

(NOTE: This doesn't even mention the sex scandals, and it's financial and corruption scandals that could be attenuated with governmental accountability that secular non-profits have to abide by.)

Ben Carson Is A Fraud

Ben Carson’s HUD is shutting down two of the largest housing projects in Cairo, Illinois, leaving the town’s fate to a higher power.

So much for bullshit Evangelical "Christian Values."

It Is More Than A Correlation

I have been promoting science-based thinking for decades. Those who resist science-based thinking include the religious, supporters of alternatives to medicine, and all other pseudosciences. Since the controlling political party in the USA, the Republicans, has been hijacked by the most radical Christians, the Evangelicals, 80% of Republicans will support Trump no matter what he does, no matter that he is far from religious. Thus, the Republicans have allowed the greatest cancer in my lifetime to have virtually unchecked power. They also use projection to call strong but legitimate opinions from reasonable people as "Trump Derangement Syndrome." Put the puzzle pieces together, Republicans. YOU are the problem as well as your corrupt, ignorant, narcissistic, disagreeable, grandiose "leader."

The Danger Of Evangelical Christianity

As we all know, the Republican Party in the USA has been hijacked by the Evangelical Christians. The meme in the image below is essentially the dogma under which they think and act: faith trumps good works. Be aware of the mindset of these folks who come across as super-moral: if they come across a reasonable, evidence-based action to improve humanity but if it is against what they think their Jesus says, there is no way they will change their mind. It has been poisoned.

A Break From The Evangelical Hold On The Republicans?

Statistics and polling show the overwhelming support of Trump and the Republicans by Evangelical Christians, especially whites (link).  However, the Southern Baptists are showing some promising signs of breaking away from the Republicans.

Simple Logic Against The Religious Infringing on the US 1st Amendment

1) The USA Constitutionally is a SECULAR government (link).
2) The SECULAR government MUST make decisions based on reason and science ONLY.
3) The Evangelicals and the Conservative Catholics want to insert their dogma into our SECULAR government.
4) mic drop.

Besides Racism, The Main Reason We Have Trump

"By presenting itself as authoritative, trustworthy journalism, Christian news reassures viewers that they do not need to consult mainstream media in order to be informed. More dangerously, it authorizes a particular, often conspiratorial way of viewing the world. It denounces neutrality or accountability to multiple constituencies as burdensome or even hostile to Christian faith."

Even Pro-Lifers Can See The Difference

"But hardly anyone truly regards having an abortion as equal in evil to killing an adult or a child. Hardly anyone thinks a woman who has an abortion belongs in a cell next to a guy who strangles his child."

I don't think abortion is murder, and neither do you

Science-based thinker:

Conception is uniting of egg and sperm from two people. During each ovulation cycle, many eggs and perhaps a conception are rejected by women each month. There are no characteristics of a person within a conception. If one or more of these conceptions are implanted in the uterus of a woman, the woman, since she has bodily autonomy, can choose whether to bring this tissue to the point of personhood.

Nostalgia For The Once-Legitimate Republican Party

This editorial is a reminder that the Republican Party was a decent, science-based political party.  I could do without the religious impregnation seen even then, however.  That said, it was nothing like the present hijacking by fundamentalist wackos. To Democrats who disagree with this post, I say NO political party has all the answers.

Torture Is A Pro-Life Issue

Fundamentalist Christians usually are dogmatic regarding the value of a growing, non-viable fetus and call their view "Pro-Life."  However, how many of the same folks work towards the welfare of the disadvantaged people in society who see few options instead of abortion? (link) In addition, these same folks are more apt to be for torture. (link) This article concerning Trump's nominee for the CIA Directorship position presents the evils of torture.

Chances Are That They Are Not Frauds

When a noted religious figure dies, there are many of us atheists who claim that he or she was a fraud or a con-man. Such claims are serious legally and ethically.  They usually involve nefarious intent.  I ask those who easily throw out these terms to think hard about it: do you have hard evidence or it is just your unsupported opinion?  If it is the latter, I suggest avoiding these terms.  Just understanding what this image states is all we need to challenge these folks. To do otherwise puts us in the position to be challenged by them as evil.

All Religion Is Harmful And False

Before the presentation below showing the harm from religion, it is important to mention up-front that no claim on reality by any religion has been accepted by science, for example, this and this. Click here to see how Christianity is false.

Following are just a few links in support of the harm of religion:

And, last but not least, Richard Carrier's take on it. If you think that liberal religion contains no harm, the last part of this link will cure you of that myth:

Billy Graham Started It All

We just ended several days of over-the-top adulation of Billy Graham.  Just as with Mother Teresa, the truth is hidden under the media hype.  For example, Billy Graham was the person who essentially initiated the present National Day of Prayer, which is clearly unconstitutional. (link)  This lead to the mainstreaming of conservative evangelical Christianity:

He made the new wave of evangelical politics possible, and essentially agreed with all the harm from such. (link) "What harm?" you say. Well for starters, profound psychological harms. (link)

In spite of the harms from evangelical Christianity, the man clearly wanted a theocracy under such. (link)

While he was more honest and decent than many other preachers, his "legacy" is evil covered by dogma and slickness. He was the BIGGEST religious placebo in history, and exhibit A of why religion poisons everything.

I Agree With This Evangelical Christian Apologist

Dr. Thomas Howe from the Southern Evangelical Seminary, in this article, makes the valid difference between a narrative and a parable in supporting the claim that the Genesis account of creation was written as an historical narrative and not an allegory or poetry.  However, he typically assumes that that settles the issue.  Nope, no such luck.

A brief reading of what I have said on this subject (click here) clearly shows that the entire Creation account in Genesis has been falsified.  If it is falsified, then why the need for a "Savior" to redeem us from a "Sin" that never happened?
