A Clear And Unbiased Look At The Argument From Fine-Tuning

"In this video, I explain how the argument that the universe is fine-tuned for life works, why it's wrong, how the mistake happens, and what that means for the existence of god and the multiverse."

Why A Christian God Would Be Extraordinary

The image above is of the Milky Way galaxy, our Sun's home.  It is estimated that there are two trillion (2,000,000,000,000) galaxies in the observable universe (link). There may be as many as a hundred billion (2,000,000,000) solar systems in our galaxy (link).

There are many scientific hypotheses that support an infinite multiverse underlying our universe, thus making the God hypothesis unnecessary (link).

Underlying our classical reality of atoms and molecules is quantum mechanics (link). Within such is a reality where the laws of cause and effect break down (link).

There is no claim of communication between God and humans consistent with the known laws of nature.

There is no way to even begin to compute a prior probability of God due to a lack of objective evidence of such (link).

Conclusion:
  • The claim for a Christian God lacks plausibility and probability, thus, it is extraordinary and requires extraordinary evidence for acceptance. There is no objective evidence for any God.

Two Controversial Topics In Research

Many magical thinkers oppose research findings falsifying their claims. Are such folks correct, at least in part? Click on the two links below for videos that do a good job of objectively analyzing Bayesian probability calculations and research study findings in general:

Research Studies Have Probability Wrong

"The problem is that the p-value gives the right answer to the wrong question. What we really want to know is not the probability of the observations given a hypothesis about the existence of a real effect, but rather the probability that there is a real effect – that the hypothesis is true – given the observations. And that is a problem of induction"

The Probability Of A God Is "Undefined"

It is easy to find religious apologists, and even a physicist, positing "evidence" showing that there probably is a god.  These attempts usually use some sort of mathematical calculation, like a variation of the Drake Equation or Baysian Analysis for example.  However,  all of these attempts ignore the fact that there is no evidence for any god.  Therefore, the denominator in the calculations is zero (0).  Whenever a number is divided by zero, the results are "undefined."   In other words, the results have no meaning.

Absence Of Evidence IS Evidence Of Absence

"Absence of evidence, or the failure to observe evidence that favors a hypothesis, is evidence against that hypothesis. This is because we are significantly more likely not to see evidence for a hypothesis when it is false than not to see it when it's true — some assertions demand that the universe be screaming with supporting evidence, so when that evidence is not actually observed, it counts against it."

(NOTE:  This is true when an hypothesis has been thoroughly investigated)

If evidence is lacking when we expect it to be abundant, then it very much allows us to dismiss a hypothesis.

Science Continues To Self-Correct

"Recently the American Statistical Association (ASA) put out a position paper in which they specifically warn against misuse of the P value. This is the first time in their 177 years of existence they have felt the need to put out such a position paper. The reason for this unprecedented act was their feeling that abuse of the P value is taking the practice of science off course, and a much needed course correction is overdue."
