Catholic "Pro-Life" Dogma: The Harm

"Last month, 87-year-old Ian Shearer was in enormous pain for a variety of reasons and wanted to end life on his own terms. The problem is that he was at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, and none of the doctors would assist him.

"He spent the last several hours of his life trying to transfer to a new hospital — the ambulance was three hours late and the ride was bumpy enough to amplify his pain — where someone could take care of him because the taxpayer-funded Catholic institution had abdicated its responsibility."

Rearranging The Chairs On The Deck Will Not Do It

"Ritual, mentors, and personal experiences. If you have doubts about Catholic teachings, though, those things will not address your concerns. The Church doubling down on its own awful beliefs will not change the mind of a child who knows better."

It Wasn't Only Hitchens Who Had Mother Teresa Figured Out

"All I can say after reading all this (Chatterjee and Hitchens were both the formal “Devil’s Advocates” at Mother Teresa’s sainthood vetting) is that any religion that would turn this woman into a Pipeline to God is deeply dysfunctional. As Hitchens says, she is venerated in the West not so much for her actual deeds as for the perception that somebody from the West was doing something tangible to help poor brown people."

The Credulity Of NPR Regarding Miracles

"If the Catholic church believes that saints are pipelines to God who can provide special cures, how come prayer to saints hasn’t restored lost eyes or amputated limbs? Why is it only diseases known to spontaneously regress that the incipient (or established) saints can “cure”? Isn’t that a remarkable coincidence?"

Padre Pio: Wonderworker Or A Fraud?

I recently had a communication from a friend of mine who is a devout Catholic.  In the comment, she mentioned in passing the "Bilocation" ability of the "Saint"  Padre Pio.  For those unfamiliar with Catholic dogma, he died several years ago and was declared a Saint a few years later.  What Catholics do not, or will not, understand is that he was a fraud, and perhaps less than "Saintly."

Gullibility + Church Economics = "Supernatural" Visions And Healings

"Michael O’Neil, a miracle researcher and author who runs the website MiracleHunter.com, told CNA that the approval is significant. It means that the messages from the apparitions are not only approved for the faithful to read, he explained: the bishop is saying the events were in fact actual miraculous apparitions."

As a skeptic, I am ready to accept all of this as "supernatural" with sufficient evidence.  What do we have here?

Catholic Hospitals

In recent decades, there has been the phenomenon of Catholic health corporations purchasing secular hospitals.  This has caused the serious issue of opposing standards of care:  secular hospitals provide care approved by medical organizations, whereas, Catholic hospitals provide care approved by Catholic authorities.

I Really Don’t Know Why Anyone Still Belongs To The Church

"Were I part of an institution that had an organized coverup of endemic child rape, and also fought against birth control on scriptural grounds, I’d be deeply ashamed of myself, and get the hell out as soon as possible."

The Catholic Church And Healthcare

"The American Civil Liberties Union and MergerWatch today released reports that reveal that one in six hospital beds in the United States is in a facility that complies with Catholic Directives that prohibit a range of reproductive health care services even when a woman’s life or health is in jeopardy. In some states, more than 40 percent of all hospital beds are in a Catholic facility, leaving entire regions without any option for certain reproductive health care."

Is The Pope Catholic?

I have been enjoying watching the reaction to Pope Francis' recent statements on family life.  Sure gives support for the claim that the Catholic Church speaks with the authority of God.  Not.

In the end, then, it seemed that the question was not so much whether the pope is Catholic, but what Catholicism is.

Catholic Church Official Teachings Conflict With Science

Many theists claim that there is no real conflict between faith and science.  Is this really true?  Following are excerpts from an official Catholic document under which the faithful are obligated to give their assent.  Why am I choosing to present the Catholic teaching?  Because I was raised Catholic, have studied the dogma of all of the major religions, and have found Catholic teaching to be the least resistant to scientific findings.  In other words, as much as Catholic teaching conflicts with science, the other major religions are worse.

Mother Teresa And The Making Of Saints

"Some of the Catholic saints, even some of the real biggies, were perfectly dreadful. For starters, a startling number were anti-Semites."

The Catholic Church's Child Sexual Abuse Is Nothing New

"Elliott’s talk spanned centuries, drawing on artifacts and texts ranging from the Warren Cup (a putative 1st-century silver cup that depicts males engaged in same-sex acts) to Dante’s Inferno to illustrate the widespread presence of—and varying attitudes toward—homosexual eroticism in the medieval Church, which included depictions of sexual relations between older and younger men. Examining the closed, and ostensibly celibate, world of medieval monasteries, Elliott drew a comparison to contemporary prison culture. “In renouncing women and all memory of them, monastic culture left a void. There was no legitimate sexual outlet,” she posited. 'Boys, then, fell within the realm of temptation.'”

Original Sin

"Catholic doctrine still maintains that a literal Adam and Eve must have existed, a primal couple who committed that personal original sin, which occasioned the need for, and the divine promise of, the coming of the Redeemer, Jesus Christ."

How many Catholics who really understand science accept this? Accept Catholic teaching and unequivocally reject science, or vise versa.
